Dancer Min Tanaka, \u201can avant-garde who crawls on the earth,\u201d has been actively performing since the 1970s, incessantly focusing on his search for the origin of dance. For this performance, editorial engineer Seigow Matsuoka joins the journey of creation. He is a long-time comrade whom Tanaka had met through Tatsumi Hijikata and has ever since collaborated with Tanaka in numerous projects both in the fields of intellect and physical expression. Submerging himself in the world of Don Quixote, an unparalleled character created by Miguel de Cervantes, Matsuoka transforms the words he collects for Tanaka\u2019s physicality. <\/p>\n<p>Locus is what Tanaka dances and Logos is where Matsuoka plays at. We have kept kindling each other\u2019s souls and conjugating each other\u2019s moments ever since. That has not changed. How we met and clicked is described in our two dialogue books, Shintai Kisho Gengo (Body\/Weather\/Language, published by Kosakusha) and Ishin denshin (Conscious Body, Contagious Mind, by Shunjusha).<\/p>\n<p>Min Tanaka has such an incomparable linguistic body. From Zeami to Vaslav Nijinski and to Tatsumi Hijikata, prominent dancers in general must have had such physicality, and Tanaka, too, has cultivated his linguistic body with a great significance. He has nurtured it and made it bloom. I am also a fan of his writing. It was singular that his linguistic body conspired with \u201cplace\u201d. He calls the plot Locus Focus.<\/p>\n<p>I, too, have been conscious of my linguistic body in my own way. In occasions like giving lectures, I did not want to utter just words. Rather, I wanted to be present in a scene where a combination of gigantic language systems is wriggling behind me and, while I was talking, it would spookily appear or swiftly abduct me.<\/p>\n<p>To be ready for the scene, I always placed sets of three books somewhere in my linguistic space and kept in contact with them. Each set consists of, for example, Shijing or the Classic of Poetry, Don Quixote de la Mancha, and Les Illuminations, or Kusamakura, Das Mutterrecht, and The Voice of Time, and so on, as I explained in the latter dialogue book.<\/p>\n<p>This time, Min Tanaka said to dance Don Quixote. And he asked me to prepare words for the performance. This is the third time, after Ancient Green Land and yowgow, to collaborate with him in this way, and this time, his Don Quixote is Don Quixote of the Village (which is the Japanese title). So, I decided to offer the words that were as if subtracted one after another from time and space that I imagined as expansively as possible ranging across the East and the West.<\/p>\n<p>In my view, the ones who summarized the ideas of the West are Dante, Boccaccio, and Cervantes, and those who expressed sublime intensity in their characters are Rabelais\u2019s Gargantua, Shakespeare\u2019s King Lear, and Cervantes\u2019s Don Quixote. This would cover all the history.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, I have always hoped that Min Tanaka would someday dance \u201ca dance of bones,\u201d taking on the inconceivable burden of geyi, exegetical adaptation of foreign concepts through comparing and correlating with domestic ideas, drawing from the West to Japan. And, how wonderful that my hope has come true with Don Quixote of the Village. We will witness the emergence of Min Quixote in villages that are looming behind the earthy Kanto Plain. I entrusted my words to Rin Ishihara, too. In the book Ishin Denshin, Min said, \u201cI believe the best training for men is to keep shifting their ways so as not to repeat the same path as before. For women, perhaps, it is better to practice going back and forth the same way.\u201d How would that manifest itself this time in the interaction between him and Rin? I look forward to it.<\/p>\n<p>Don Quixote of the Village will probably be a masterpiece which will symbolically show various aspects of history that Min Tanaka has long been deeply convinced of: its ridiculousness, suffering, and transition. The village functions as a sacred boundary for that. In the middle of the performance, there will be a scene where he dances with a long stick. His body and the stick would intermingle with each other and draw words in the air, and I secretly assigned three Chinese characters for it. I hope you imagine what they are.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>Min Tanaka<br \/>\nHe began his own expression activities in 1974 and developed a brand-new style called \u201chyper-dance.\u201d In 1978, Tanaka made his international debut at the Louvre Museum and extensively presented his radical performances in former-communist countries throughout the \u201980s while gaining high recognition worldwide. In 1985, he opened an organic farm on the mountainside, and to date, he continues his dance activity, basing his daily farming life. For his first feature film appearance in Twilight Samurai, directed by Yoji Yamada, Tanaka won the 26th Best Supporting Actor\u2019s Award by one of Japan\u2019s leading cinema associations. Two films are scheduled to be released in 2021: Hokusai, directed by Hajime Hashimoto with Tanaka starring as the legendary printmaker, and Unnameable Dance, a documentary about Tanaka, directed by Isshin Inudo. After playing as a member of the New Japan Philharmonic from 1988 to 1991, Shika became independent and expanded his horizon, collaborating with artists from diverse genres of music. He is also highly reputed as one of the best strings arranger of the 2010s in Japan\u2019s commercial music industry. Also, he is the captain of the Itaru Hirama Photo Studio TOKYO Cello Club.<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/udai66.com\/<\/p>\n<p>Megumi Sasaki<br \/>\nBorn in Niigata. Sasaki began learning cello as her lifelong interest even before learning how to read music, when she fell in love with the sound of the instrument at her friend\u2019s concert. She calls her cello Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Sho Tomoda<br \/>\nAfter graduating from Tokyo Metropolitan Senior High School of Fine Arts and Tokyo University of the Arts, Tomoda began her career playing in professional orchestras. While trained in classical music, she expandes the scope of her activities, working with various artists and singers, including Seiko Matsuda, MISIA, and Mai Kuraki. Also, Tomoda actively performs electric cello in concerts. She currently teaches at Tokyo Metropolitan Senior High School of Fine Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Itaru Hirama\u3000<br \/>\nBorn Shiogama, Miyagi, in 1963. Hirama has photographed many artists from diverse fields, capturing musicality and liveliness in his portrait pictures. As his lifework, Hirama has taken photographs of Min Tanaka\u2019s site specific dance performance, Locus Focus, and in 2013, the series became an exhibition and a photo book Last Movement: Toward the final gesture (Hakushindo). He opened Itaru Hirama Photo Studio TOKYO, where he also enjoys playing the cello in its cello club he established.
